National Banner Contest
Calling all teachers of Grades 5 to 8!
YOUR STUDENTS’ ART COULD BE FLYING HIGH IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL!
The National Capital Commission (NCC), in partnership with Classroom Connections, is running an amazing
CROSS-CANADA CONTEST and PUBLIC ART PROJECT Students in Grades 5 through 8 (Elementary 5 to Secondary 2 in Quebec) are being asked to create and submit a one-of-a-kind banner design to the “RaiseYour Voices!” National Student Banner Contest. The design should represent an issue or topic of importance to Canadian youth.
This contest is an extension of The Gathering Place: An Exploration of Canada’s Capital, and we have enclosed a copy for your class. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with contest participation.
The lessons and activities in the resource explore the following:
- Canadian culture, identity and symbols
- Government, citizenship and democracy
- Canadian stories, heroes and celebrations
- Canada’s connections and contributions to the world
Introducing the Contest
- You may want to use Theme 3: Exploring Our Identity to introduce the contest through curriculum objectives/expectations related to personal identity, Canadian identity and the symbols that represent and reflect us as a nation.
- We have also included a brand NEW lesson, specifically designed to facilitate contest participation using visual arts curriculum links.
